Museum wants a piece of BrookSpeak
Today I received an email from a researcher from The Newseum. The Newseum bills itself as an "interactive museum of news." The coolest thing about their website is the daily exhibit of front-pages from newspapers around the world. They also have exhibits on photojournalism, cartooning and news coverage from pivotal moments in history (JFK assassination, D-Day, September 11, etc.) I've known about their website for a few years and have used it especially when I want some inspiration for front-page design.
The Newseum is in the process of building an incredible museum in Washington D.C. dedicated to journalism and the 1st Amendment. The museum will be located between the U.S. Capitol and the White House and adjacent to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall.
Well, what does this have to do with me? The researcher wrote, "[The Newseum] would like to reproduce the front page of your newspaper BrookSpeak, vol. 1, no. 3, in an exhibition about First Amendment issues in the news. It will illustrate a section discussing high-school journalism."
Needless to say, a copy of BrookSpeak is in the mail. I'm very excited for BrookSpeak to be a tiny part of this endeavor. I can't wait until the 2007 museum opening to see it for myself. Maybe I will be able to take Pebblebrook journalism students. I can dream can't I?
Obediently yours,
~jon
P.S. I'm not sure if a postscript is appropriate for a blog, but I just received a response from the researcher at The Newseum. Here is what she wrote: "Thanks very much for your prompt reply and for sending us a copy of that issue. It's good to know you're not giving up. We hope you'll be able to visit the Newseum with your student journalists sometime. The First Amendment Gallery will address some of the very issues you (and your students) are contending with. Let us know when you are coming. I'm not in charge of tours, and the opening is still years away, but perhaps something special can be arranged for you at that time."
